About This Stage

One of the most isolated stages in all of Asturias, with two route variants: the 'Ruta de las Palancas' (mountain route through the Vaqueiros country) or the 'Ballotas' alternative (coastal). Both offer spectacular scenery but require carrying all food and water.

The Palancas route is a genuine mountain path along the coast, with panoramic views of the protected Asturian western coastline and the interior sierras. The terrain is steep and demanding with nearly 1,200 metres of climbing, but the views are among the finest on the Norte. The route has been cleaned and re-waymarked in recent years.

Cadaveu is a small hamlet with sweeping ocean views and proximity to the dramatic cliffs of Cabo Vidio. The ermita de Cadaveu is worth visiting. Unforgettable sunsets over the Atlantic. Very limited accommodation; book ahead.

Terrain: Steep coastal climbs, cliff-edge paths, forest trails, exposed headland sections
