About Pieros

Pieros sits in the province of Leon between Cacabelos and Villafranca del Bierzo, in the El Bierzo wine region. The Camino passes through the village on its way west.

The village is small but its setting is historically significant. The flat-topped hill rising directly south of Pieros is Castro Ventosa, a major Celtic-Roman archaeological site in El Bierzo. The hilltop was the location of a pre-Roman Celtic oppidum and the later Roman city of Bergidum, the principal Roman settlement of the El Bierzo region, from which the region itself takes its name. Excavations have revealed walls, dwellings, and finds spanning the Iron Age through the Roman period. The site is freely accessible by a short detour from the Camino.

Services in Pieros are limited. There is a bar-restaurant. There is no albergue, no shop, no pharmacy, and no ATM. Most pilgrims walk straight through.
