About Santo Domingo de la Calzada

Santo Domingo de la Calzada is one of the most characterful towns on the Camino Frances, named after the 11th-century saint who dedicated his life to building roads, bridges, and a hospital for pilgrims.

The cathedral is famous for its unique feature: a live rooster and hen kept in an ornate Gothic henhouse inside the building, commemorating the miraculous legend of a falsely accused pilgrim. The town's medieval centre is well-preserved, with the original pilgrim hospital (now a parador) and the saint's tomb in the cathedral.

Pilgrims will find albergues, hotels, restaurants, supermarkets, ATMs, and a pharmacy. The town is a rewarding overnight stop with genuine Camino atmosphere.

SightVisit the Cathedral and See the Live ChickensThe Cathedral of Santo Domingo is a Gothic masterpiece and home to one of the strangest sights on the Camino: a live rooster and hen kept in an ornate henhouse inside the church. They commemorate the Legend of the Hanged Pilgrim, in which a roasted rooster and hen leapt off the judge's dinner plate to prove an innocent pilgrim's innocence. The henhouse is directly opposite the tomb of Santo Domingo himself.
HistoryLearn the Legend of the Hanged PilgrimThe most famous Camino legend. A young pilgrim was framed for theft by an innkeeper's daughter whose advances he rejected. He was hanged, but his parents found him alive on their return from Santiago, saved by Santo Domingo. When they told the judge, he scoffed that the boy was as alive as the roast chickens on his plate. The chickens immediately sprouted feathers and crowed. The legend is everywhere in town: on souvenirs, cakes, and even the cathedral itself.
SightWalk the Medieval WallsSanto Domingo has the most important surviving medieval walls in all of La Rioja. Parts date from the 13th and 14th centuries, built during the Castilian civil wars. Walk along the remaining sections for a sense of how the town once looked as a fortified pilgrim stop.

It has served pilgrims continuously for over 900 years, making it one of the oldest hotels in Europe.
