About This Stage
The first stage in Spain begins with the ferry crossing from Caminha to A Guarda, a lively fishing town on the Galician side of the Minho estuary. From A Guarda, the route follows the wild Atlantic coastline north through one of the most scenic sections of the entire Coastal Camino.
The path hugs the Galician coast, climbing over rocky headlands and descending to sheltered coves. The landscape is raw and beautiful, with Atlantic swells, granite outcrops, and coastal scrub defining the character. Small fishing villages dot the route, offering occasional cafes and water. The terrain is moderately hilly with frequent short ascents and descents.
Oia is a small coastal village dominated by its impressive 12th-century Cistercian monastery (Mosteiro de Santa Maria de Oia), which sits dramatically on the shoreline. Accommodation is limited and should be booked ahead. A couple of restaurants and a small shop provide basic services.
Terrain: Coastal paths, rocky headland trails, some paved roads, village cobblestones
