Stage 5 of 13

Viana do Castelo → Caminha

28 km | 7-10 hours | +757m / -763m

About This Stage

A varied stage that marks the transition from flat coastal walking to more undulating terrain. The route follows the coast initially before climbing inland through forested hills, then descending to the Lima River estuary and the beautiful city of Viana do Castelo.

The elevation gain is a noticeable step up from the flat stages before, with some genuine hills in the middle section. The landscape shifts between coastal scrub, pine forest, and agricultural land. The final approach into Viana do Castelo along the Lima River is one of the route's scenic highlights.

Viana do Castelo is the jewel of the northern Portuguese coast. Dominated by the hilltop Santuario de Santa Luzia (reached by funicular or on foot), the city has a magnificent art deco waterfront, medieval old town, excellent restaurants, and a vibrant cultural scene. Full pilgrim services are available, and many walkers take a rest day here.

Terrain: Coastal paths, hilly sections inland, forest trails, riverside approach, cobblestone streets
