Despite the short distance, this is one of the Primitivo's most dramatic stages. From the plateau at La Mesa, the route passes the Ermita de Santa Marina before beginning the extraordinary descent to the Embalse de Salime reservoir. The drop is steep and sustained, with loose stone underfoot requiring poles and careful footing.
The Mirador de la Boca de la Ballena (Whale's Mouth viewpoint) offers spectacular views of the reservoir, the surrounding mountains reflected in the still water far below. The descent through dense chestnut forest is atmospheric but hard on the knees.
Grandas de Salime sits beside the reservoir and has the Museo Etnografico, one of the finest ethnographic museums in Asturias, documenting traditional mountain life with farming tools, domestic objects, and reconstructed traditional buildings including a complete traditional kitchen.
Terrain: High plateau, dramatic descent on loose stone, reservoir approach
A tiny mountain hamlet at a high point on the Camino Primitivo with an albergue and a bar. One of the most remote and exposed stops on any Camino route.
A small Asturian mountain town near the border with Galicia, with an ethnographic museum, a reservoir, and full services. A welcome resupply point after the remote mountain stages.
