The route climbs from Pola de Allande over the Puerto del Palo pass, one of the highest points on the Primitivo. The ascent passes through increasingly exposed mountain terrain, with sweeping views opening up across the Asturian mountains.
The path crosses wild highland landscape of heather, gorse, and mountain grassland. Watch for the birds of prey that ride the thermals above the ridges. The isolation on this section is profound, with no services or settlements between the towns.
La Mesa sits on a high plateau, a tiny hamlet where Berducedo provides the nearest services with two albergues (municipal and private), several bars, and a small shop. This is the Primitivo at its most remote and beautiful.
Terrain: Mountain paths, forest trails, deep valleys, tiny stone hamlets, continuous ascents and descents
A small Asturian mountain town with a ruined castle, albergues, and basic services. Set in a deep valley surrounded by mountains on one of the most demanding stretches of the Primitivo.
A tiny mountain hamlet at a high point on the Camino Primitivo with an albergue and a bar. One of the most remote and exposed stops on any Camino route.
