Santo Domingo de la Calzada

The Cathedral of Santo Domingo is a Gothic masterpiece and home to one of the strangest sights on the Camino: a live rooster and hen kept in an ornate henhouse inside the church. They commemorate the Legend of the Hanged Pilgrim, in which a roasted rooster and hen leapt off the judge's dinner plate to prove an innocent pilgrim's innocence. The henhouse is directly opposite the tomb of Santo Domingo himself.

The most famous Camino legend. A young pilgrim was framed for theft by an innkeeper's daughter whose advances he rejected. He was hanged, but his parents found him alive on their return from Santiago, saved by Santo Domingo. When they told the judge, he scoffed that the boy was as alive as the roast chickens on his plate. The chickens immediately sprouted feathers and crowed. The legend is everywhere in town: on souvenirs, cakes, and even the cathedral itself.

Santo Domingo has the most important surviving medieval walls in all of La Rioja. Parts date from the 13th and 14th centuries, built during the Castilian civil wars. Walk along the remaining sections for a sense of how the town once looked as a fortified pilgrim stop.

The Parador de Santo Domingo is housed in the original 12th-century pilgrim hospital founded by Santo Domingo himself. It has served pilgrims continuously for over 900 years, making it one of the oldest hotels in Europe. Even if you are not staying, step inside the lobby to see the original stone arches and imagine the medieval pilgrims who rested here before you.

The tree-lined central promenade that divides the old walled town from the newer areas. On the paving tiles, every town along the Camino Frances from Roncesvalles to Santiago is inscribed in order.
