Albergue de peregrinos Cofradía del Santo

Run by the Brotherhood of the Saint, this pilgrim hostel on Calle Mayor sits at the heart of Santo Domingo de la Calzada's old town, steps from the cathedral. Opened in 2009, it replaced an earlier hostel operated by the same brotherhood, which has long played a central role in the town's pilgrim hospitality tradition.

The hostel holds 169 beds spread across ten dormitories, with bunks and low beds in rooms ranging from 10 to 26 people. It operates year-round and is open exclusively to pilgrims. Facilities include a free kitchen, covered bike storage, and accessible facilities for those with reduced mobility.

One of the more distinctive features is the garden, which includes a footbath for tired feet and a small aviary. The birds kept here are raised specifically to supply the cathedral's famous henhouse, where a live rooster and hen have been kept for centuries in memory of a medieval miracle central to the town's identity. That miracle, involving a wrongly hanged pilgrim who was found alive and supposedly kept upright by the saint's intercession, is one of the most celebrated legends on the entire Camino Francés. Staying here places pilgrims directly in the orbit of that tradition, with the cathedral and the town's historic pilgrim infrastructure immediately at hand.
